Flanking the banks of the Econlockhatchee River, a ribbon of wilderness protects a swath of forests edged on one side by suburbia, on the other by ranchland. It is the Little-Big Econ State Forest, more than 5,000 acres of uplands and cypress swamps along this floodplain river, a sinuous waterway with tall bluffs and many tributaries. Little Econ Greenway is an easy-to-follow, paved trail about 7 miles in length. The trail runs parallel to the Little Econlockhatchee River from Forsyth Road to Alafaya Trail.

Little Big Econ State Park is a beautiful place to enjoy some hiking and enjoying Florida flora and fauna. We hiked the Kolokee loop trail and it was gorgeous. With the large amount of rain that Central Florida has been getting the river overflowed and blocked part of the right hand side of the trail so we explored more of the trail from the left side.

Econ River - Upstream from St. Johns River. We paddled about 3 miles upstream and back. Here the river is wide and flows through prairie with no shade for about 1.5 miles when more trees line the shore. The river remains wide, however, and very little shade in this section. The river flows north from its source, Lake Conlin, through the Econlockhatchee River Swamp (see below) south of State Road 528. Near the City of Oviedo , the tributary Little Econlockhatchee River joins, and the river turns east as it flows through the Little Big Econ State Forest .
